The roofs of the Marin County Civic Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, have presented a roofing challenge since their conception in the late 1950s.

Originally designed to be clad in gold, the highly ornamented roofs were ultimately constructed in the 1960s with fluid-applied roofing systems in a unique shade of blue that has become an integral part of Wright’s largest completed civic structure.

Re-roofing Wright’s uniquely designed structure, consisting of lightweight structural concrete barrel-vaulted and domed roofs adorned with precast concrete ridge and medallion ornaments and perforated by precast concrete trellises at the eaves presents a similar challenge for which roofing technology has only relatively recently provided adequate solutions.

This presentation will review the investigation and product selection procedures employed to select a durable, high-performance roofing system that also honors Wright’s design;
review the design elements that enhance the performance of Wright’s design without modifying the character of the roof; and review some of the challenges encountered during the first phase of construction.
